Woodstock Church Announces Vision for Home-Centered Faith
‘Faith at Home’ mission aims at helping reverse younger generations’ church attrition
WOODSTOCK, IL. – April 11, 2010 – To address recent findings that fewer than 10 percent of families spend spiritual time together outside of church, Woodstock AG today announced it will focus on providing families with access to programs, services and resources that equip and encourage daily bible study, prayer and worship within the home. In addition to extending much of the support already provided, Woodstock AG’s ‘Faith at Home’ mission includes a new web site, Home Court Advantage (weekly bible-based family fun night) and upcoming outreach events.
According to the Barna Research Institute, a firm widely considered the leading research organization focused on the intersection of faith and culture, the breakdown in a family-centered model of spirituality is also one factor contributing to large percentage of young adults leaving their faith.
In their report, Barna cites, “despite strong levels of spiritual activity during the teen years, most 20-somethings disengage from active participation in the Christian faith during their young adult years.” It continues, “six out of 10 twenty-somethings involved in a church during their teens fail to actively pursue Christ into their early adult years.”
And not only are twenty-somethings vacating the church, the report concludes, they are also not returning.
“The #1 problem facing the Christian church today is figuring out how to equip the home to once again be the primary place where faith is nurtured,” said Woodstock AG’s Lead Pastor Roger Willis. “We are losing the next generation to the world; once-a-week exposure at church simply cannot compete with the daily experience of practicing faith within the home.”
To help launch the new Faith at Home mission, Woodstock AG turned to a group of Christian-based branding and communications agencies, including Spread Truth Media for developing the brand and corporate identity; Elevate and Monk Development for a new website; and JSK Consulting on brand positioning and research, including online surveys with current and prospective members, and internal staff.
“There is no one more influential in a young person’s life than their parents,” said Willis. “Our job is to support the family home, not take its place.”
